History & Record

Selma High School's Air Force Junior ROTC unit is one of Alabama’s oldest units. We began our existence in 1975.

Cadets have embraced high expectations and standards to create an environment of mutual respect and support.  Cadets learn in a friendly, fun, hands-on learning atmosphere. Our motto, "Pride, Honor and Confidence", explains Selma High’s Air Force Junior ROTC.  The unit's vision is simply to be the nations' best Air Force Junior ROTC program.

Our goal is for cadets to become better citizens in OUR community. We have had a success rate of sending out future leaders into Selma’s communities and have always been embraced with open arms. Your son/daughter wants to become a part of that unique history.

Expectations

This truly is a world-class, cadet-led leadership development and aerospace science academic course and organization that is an excellent elective for every career path and career major. An extremely popular program, about one in six students take AFJROTC at SHS.

Our standards are high. We expect four things:

1. Do your best to meet AFJROTC standards and be the best scholar, leader, and citizen you can.

2. Do your best to help every other cadets succeed.

3. Do your best to make your AFJROTC program the best in the nation.

4.  Cadets must contribute to something larger than themselves--AFJROTC.

In return, The AFJROTC teachers and cadet leaders will guide, advise, and assist you to accomplish your school, further education, career, and life goals.

Standards

We do have dress and appearance standards with uniforms issued free, on loan.  We do operate on an Honor Code, "I will not lie, steal or cheat, nor tolerate those who do."  Similarly, due to the nature of AFJROTC and high visibility within the school and community cadets are held to a higher standard of behavior than might be found in the rest of the student body.

Cadets find that what they learn here helps them to be successful in gaining admission to their college of choice, earning scholarships, and being successful in life.

We do have an annual $10 activity fee that covers a number of items and activities.  It is similar to, but much less than, the activity fee paid for band, vocal music, dance, or sports teams. The fee is paid at the beginning of the school year when uniforms are issued.
